A full Desmos graphing calculator is built into the entire Math section. Students who treat it as just a number-cruncher leave points on the table. Used well, it turns hard algebra into a few keystrokes.
Core idea: Almost any "solve for x," "find where they're equal," or "find the max/min" question can be done by graphing instead of by hand.
The high-value moves
- Solve an equation: type it in as written (e.g.,
3x+5=2x-1); Desmos shows the solution point. Or graph each side and read the intersection. - Solve a system: type both equations; the intersection point is your (x, y) solution — click it to get exact coordinates.
- Find zeros / roots: graph
y = expressionand click where it crosses the x-axis. - Find a max or min (vertex): graph the parabola and click the turning point.
- Tables: use a table to test values fast, or to work backward from answer choices.
When NOT to graph: quick one-step arithmetic or plugging in a value is faster by hand. Graph when the algebra is messy, when you're unsure, or to double-check an answer you already found.
